I live in Tucson, Arizona with my husband Steve, a book designer. Though I was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and lived for many years in Boston, the colors and shapes of the Southwest have always inspired me. I learned to weave in 1968, and even my early work shows the influence of the desert.

I was in the yarn business for 32 years, first as a yarn shop owner, then as a sales rep, and finally as the wholesale importer and distributor of Manos del Uruguay yarns. I designed and published knitting patterns under the names A Bear in Sheep’s Clothing, Designs by Judith, and Design Source. These patterns can be seen and purchased at https://www.ravelry.com/designers/judith-shangold

Now retired and living in Tucson, I spend a lot of my time weaving and thinking about weaving. I have had articles published in Handwoven magazine and am very active in the Tucson Handweavers & Spinners Guild. I am the chairperson of the guild’s Annual Show & Sale that takes place in October. I WILL BE TEACHING A WEAVING WORKSHOP AT THIS FESTIVAL AND WILL ALSO HAVE SOME OF MY WORK FOR SALE AT THE TUCSON HANDWEAVERS & SPINNERS GUILD BOOTH.

My class is called “A Smorgasbord of Weaving Techniques”. It is a 3-hour class on Saturday, April 6 from 9am - noon. Learn how to jazz up your plain weave with a series of techniques: Alternating and blending colors, hatching and weaving angles and curves, sumack stitch, and leno lace. Bring your rigid heddle or other portable loom.

Go to www.azfed.org to see the full listing of workshops being offered.

Camp Verde is less than an hour from Sedona and Prescott in an interesting archeological area of central Arizona.

This event is sponsored by the Arizona Federation of Weavers and Spinners Guilds. Come check out the member guilds from around the state and treat yourself to learning a new skill!
